He is ultimately killed by one of the gang members, burning to death after a Molotov cocktail is thrown in his direction. He then hears his father (Spall)'s voice and we see him talking to a young Jamie under the tree. Then Jamie turns into his adult form and looks toward the sky leaving us staring at the stars.
